Engineers have designed a robot that appears like a worm which can crawl along surface just like a living worm. By this contraction method which make it to create with a special type of soft material which can pass through tight space and even rough terrains.
It can also withstand heavy blows without damaging its parts. Pentagon's Darpa unit backed this project called Mesh worm project and suggesting a possible military use.
Mesh-worm was designed and produced by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in the US and Seoul National University in South Korea.
Detailed project reports are published in the journals of IEEE/ASE Transactions on Mechatronics.
Whats Unique?
Its unique part is usage of soft material as its body part which can sustain heavy blows. In previous attempts of creating such robot fails due to the usage of gears and air-pumps, but this is an added burden in its physical structure. Darpa unit backed the project with "artificial muscle" made of titanium and nickle wire designed to stretch and contract.
